Wildlife and Conservation
Mkomazi is a vital stronghold for endangered species, particularly the black rhino and African wild dog, both of which are part of conservation programs within the park. Other wildlife includes elephants, giraffes, zebras, elands, hartebeests, oryx, impalas, buffaloes, and dik-diks. Predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas also roam the park.
Birdlife
With over 450 bird species, Mkomazi is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Notable species include the scarlet-chested sunbird, go-away bird, ostrich, hornbills, secretary bird, and various birds of prey like eagles and kestrels.
Unique Landscape and Scenery
Mkomazi’s semi-arid environment is characterized by acacia woodlands, open savannah, and rocky outcrops, offering stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Pare Mountains. The park’s dry terrain is a stark contrast to the lush landscapes of other northern parks like Serengeti and Tarangire.
